dental emergency
What counts as a dental emergency?
Call us immediately if you’re experiencing any of the following:
- Severe or persistent toothache
- A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
- A broken, cracked, or badly chipped tooth
- A lost filling or crown
- A dental abscess, swelling, or signs of infection
- Bleeding that won’t stop after an injury
- A broken or painful denture
What can usually wait for a regular appointment: a small chip with no pain, mild sensitivity, or a lost filling that isn’t causing discomfort. When in doubt, call us – we’ll help you decide.
Seek immediate medical attention (ER) if you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, or facial trauma with uncontrolled bleeding – these go beyond dental care.
The steps
What to do right now - first-aid before you reach us
These steps can ease symptoms and protect your tooth on the way to our office. They’re first aid, not a substitute for treatment – call us as soon as you can.
Knocked-out tooth
Pick it up by the crown (the white part), never the root. If it’s dirty, rinse gently with milk or water – don’t scrub or remove attached tissue. Try to place it back in the socket and bite gently on gauze; if you can’t, keep it in a cup of milk. Get to us as fast as possible – ideally within an hour – for the best chance of saving it.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed, and use a cold compress on your cheek for swelling. Don’t place aspirin directly on the gum – it can burn the tissue. Persistent pain often signals infection, so call us promptly.
Toothache at night
Rinse with warm salt water, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, keep your head elevated to reduce throbbing, and apply a cold compress. These ease the pain until you can call us first thing.
Broken or chipped tooth
Save any fragments, rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply gauze if there’s bleeding. Use a cold compress to limit swelling and avoid chewing on that side. Call us – with same-day CEREC crowns, we can often repair a broken tooth in a single visit.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown if you have it. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean; a dab of over-the-counter dental cement can protect the tooth temporarily. Call us to have it re-cemented promptly before the tooth is damaged further.
Dental abscess or swelling
This is a spreading infection and shouldn’t wait – call us right away. A warm salt-water rinse can ease discomfort. If you develop facial swelling, fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Dental emergencies
Dental emergencies we treat
Because we’re a full-service practice, we handle nearly every dental emergency in-house – no referral needed. That includes pain management, infection and abscess treatment, root canal therapy to save an infected tooth, repairs and same-day crowns for broken teeth, re-cementing lost crowns, emergency extractions, and denture repairs. We also care for children’s dental emergencies with the same gentle, prompt attention.
Same Day Relief
Fast, same-day relief close to home
When you’re in pain, the last thing you want is a long wait or a drive to an unfamiliar clinic. As an established Clarks Summit practice – not a referral service – we prioritize emergencies and aim to see you the same day. Dr. Dennis has decades of experience and the technology to treat most urgent problems in one visit, from digital X-rays for fast diagnosis to same-day CEREC crowns. Just as importantly, we know dental emergencies are stressful, so we explain every step clearly and work efficiently to get you comfortable again.

Why choose Dr. Dennis for Dental emergencies
Dental emergencies is one of the most demanding things a dentist does – it requires restorative skill, an understanding of the bite, and a cosmetic eye, all coordinated into a single plan. Crucially, he delivers your entire emergencies under one roof – so you’re not sent from specialist to specialist, and your care stays coordinated by the one dentist who knows your whole plan.

Patient stories
In their own words.
“Dr. Dennis and his staff are wonderful. Very professional and personable. I had an emergency on Super Bowl weekend, and he opened the office for me, quickly identified my problem, and fixed it. That really impressed me as I was expecting a call on Monday. What made a bigger impression was that Dr. Dennis called to check on me in the following days. They are the best in this area, hands down. The office is very modern and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs a dentist. Thanks, Doc.”

“I truly cannot recommend this office and dental staff enough. I’m in between insurance at the moment and woke up this morning with 10/10 pain in one of my wisdom teeth. This was the first dentist that offered emergency dental services, and I’m so glad they were. They were able to get me in two hours later. Every single staff member from the front desk to the technicians to Dr. Dennis himself were all so friendly, caring, and so genuine. Thank you all for making a super stressful day seem just a little less scary.”

I found them when I needed EMERGENCY care and this group is the ONLY truly emergency dental providers. The next closest are in Allentown. These people understand the assignment and their delivery is absolute 💯 FIRE! You want the BEST… this is it!“

Frequently asked
Questions we hear often.
Do you see dental emergencies the same day?
Yes. If you’re in severe pain or have dental trauma, call (570) 587-4031 as early as you can and we’ll do our best to see you the same day. Friday and Saturday emergency appointments are available by arrangement.
What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?
Pick it up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it with milk or water without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, store it in a cup of milk and get to us as fast as possible – ideally within an hour – for the best chance of saving it.
How do I stop a toothache at night?
Rinse with warm salt water, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, keep your head elevated, and apply a cold compress. These ease the pain until you can call us first thing – a lasting toothache usually needs treatment, as it often signals infection.
Is a dental abscess an emergency?
Yes. An abscess is an infection that can spread if untreated, so call us right away. Seek immediate medical care if you have facial swelling, fever, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Do you accept emergency walk-ins?
Please call first if you can, so we can prepare and reduce your wait – but we’ll always do our best to fit urgent cases in quickly.
Can you fix a broken tooth in one visit?
Often, yes. With same-day CEREC crown technology and digital imaging, we can frequently diagnose and repair a broken tooth in a single appointment rather than making you wait for a lab.
Will my insurance cover emergency dental care?
Many plans cover emergency exams and treatment. We accept most major plans, verify your coverage, and offer financing so you can get care without delay. We’ll always explain costs before proceeding.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe or lasting pain, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown causing discomfort, swelling or infection, and uncontrolled bleeding all count. A small painless chip can usually wait – call us and we’ll help you decide.
My child chipped a tooth or has severe pain - what should I do?
Call us immediately. We treat children’s dental emergencies with gentle, prompt care. In the meantime, rinse with warm water, apply a cold compress for swelling, and save any tooth fragments.
