Root Canal
Do root canals hurt?
This is the question almost everyone asks first – and the honest answer is no. Modern root canal therapy is about as comfortable as getting a filling. The severe pain people associate with root canals actually comes from the infection inside the tooth, not from the treatment – which is designed to relieve that pain. The procedure earned its old reputation decades ago, before today’s anaesthetics and techniques. We completely numb the tooth first, so during treatment you’ll feel only light pressure, and most patients are relieved by how easy it is. If you ever feel discomfort, we adjust immediately.
What
What is a root canal?
Inside every tooth is a soft core called the pulp, which contains the nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack, or an injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it becomes infected or inflamed – causing pain and, if untreated, a spreading infection that can lead to an abscess and tooth loss. A root canal removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the inner canals, seals them, and restores the tooth (usually with a crown), so you keep your natural tooth instead of losing it.

Signs you may need a root canal
Only an exam and X-ray can confirm it, but these are the most common warning signs – if any sound familiar, don’t wait:
Persistent or throbbing tooth pain that doesn’t go away Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the food or drink is gone
Pain when biting, chewing, or applying pressure
Swelling or tenderness in the gum near a tooth, or a small pimple-like bump
A tooth that has darkened or discoloured
A deep cavity, cracked tooth, or a filling that has failed

Root canal vs. extraction - why saving your tooth matters
When a tooth is badly infected, you generally have two choices: save it with a root canal, or remove it and replace it. Whenever possible, saving your natural tooth is the better option – nothing functions quite like your own tooth, and it avoids the extra steps and cost of replacement.

Removed
Typical cost over time
Usually lower (root canal + crown)
Higher (extraction plus implant or bridge)
Jawbone

Can shrink after removal

More (removal, then replacement)
If a tooth truly can’t be saved, we’ll talk you through replacement options such as dental implants – but our first goal is always to preserve your natural tooth.
The procedure
The root canal procedure - what to expect
Most root canals take about 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the tooth and the complexity of the infection.
Numbing
Dr. Dennis fully numbs the tooth and surrounding area with local anaesthetic so you’re comfortable throughout.
Access
A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp.
Cleaning
The infected tissue is removed, and the inner canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected.
Sealing
The canals are filled and sealed to prevent further infection.
Restoration
The tooth is rebuilt – usually with a crown, especially on back teeth – to protect it and restore full function.
Recovery
Recovery after a root canal
Recovery is usually quick and easy. It’s normal to feel mild soreness or sensitivity for a couple of days as the area heals – this is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers, and most patients return to work or normal activities right away. Once your permanent crown is placed, your tooth can function normally for many years. If discomfort lingers beyond a few days, give us a call so we can check on it.

Frequently asked
Questions we hear often.
Do root canals hurt?
No – modern root canals are about as comfortable as a filling. The tooth is fully numbed, and the treatment actually relieves the pain caused by the infection rather than creating it.
How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals take about 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the tooth and how complex the infection is. Some cases are completed in one visit; others take two.
What are the signs I need a root canal?
Common signs include persistent tooth pain, lingering hot/cold sensitivity, pain when chewing, gum swelling or a bump near the tooth, and a darkened tooth. Only an exam and X-ray can confirm it – call us if any sound familiar.
Is a root canal better than pulling the tooth?
Usually, yes. Saving your natural tooth preserves your bite and jawbone and is typically more cost-effective than extracting and replacing it with an implant or bridge. We only recommend extraction when a tooth truly can’t be saved.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Often, especially on back teeth. A root canal can leave a tooth more brittle, and a crown protects it from cracking so it can last for years. We can often place a same-day crown to complete your treatment.
Does insurance cover a root canal?
Usually a portion, yes, because root canals are major restorative care. Coverage depends on your plan, deductible, and annual maximum. We verify your benefits and offer financing for the balance.
How long does a root canal last?
A well-restored root-canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime with good care. Keeping up with brushing, flossing, and regular checkups protects it – the tooth can still get a new cavity if neglected.
What is recovery like?
Easy for most people. Expect mild soreness for a couple of days, manageable with over-the-counter pain relief, and a quick return to normal activities.
Do you perform root canals in-house or refer out?
We perform them in-house. Dr. Dennis does root canals himself, so there’s no separate referral – and with emergency appointments available, we can help quickly when you’re in pain.
In pain? Let’s save your tooth.
A root canal is nothing to fear – and it’s the best way to relieve tooth pain and keep your natural smile. Call (570) 587-4031 or request an evaluation, and we’ll get you comfortable again quickly.
